Farewell, BioWare: A Tribute to Mass Effect & How the Normandy Shaped This Portfolio
A tribute to BioWare and the Mass Effect trilogy following EA's closure of BioWare and cancellation of the new Mass Effect: how the Systems Alliance HUD and Normandy CIC Galaxy Map shaped the 3D design of spet01.dev, plus the new Mass Effect OST Jukebox tab and /shepard CLI protocol.
In Memoriam — BioWare & the Mass Effect Universe:
Today marks a heartbreaking day for video game history: Electronic Arts has officially closed BioWare and canceled the next Mass Effect. For millions of players, writers, and game engineers around the world, Mass Effect was never just another sci-fi RPG franchise—it was the gold standard of interactive world-building, unforgettable characters, atmospheric synthesizer scores, and diegetic user interface design. This entry is a personal tribute to the studio and the trilogy that inspired the very architecture, visual identity, and interactive 3D soul of spet01.dev.
🫡 Interactive Tribute Activated: Open the terminal (
Ctrl + Kor`) and type/shepard(or open the OST Jukebox and select the new Mass Effect OST tab) to listen to Uncharted Worlds, Leaving Earth, The Illusive Man, Suicide Mission, Vigil, and more while exploring the stars.
"Does this unit have a soul?"
Studios may be shuttered by corporate balance sheets, and unannounced projects may be canceled in boardrooms—but the worlds BioWare built, the choices we agonized over, and the engineers they inspired to write code will live forever in memory.
1. How Mass Effect Shaped the Design DNA of spet01.dev
If you have spent any time browsing this portfolio, you have already experienced BioWare's influence firsthand. From the very first line of CSS and GLSL written for spet01.dev, the visual and atmospheric direction was conceived as a love letter to the Systems Alliance and Cerberus CIC interfaces from Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3:
- Holographic Telemetry & Glassmorphism: The dark obsidian panels (
#050505), razor-thin cyan hairlines (#00aaff/#38bdf8), tactical monospace readouts, and warm amber/crimson accents (#f59e0b/#ef4444) directly echo the Omni-tool, Codex terminals, and Normandy bridge displays. - Diegetic Sound Design: When you hover over interactive elements, unlock secret sectors, or engage a jump across the portfolio, the Web Audio subsystem triggers authentic Mass Effect interface cues—from EDI's
"Anomaly Detected"and"Scans Found Something"voice lines to the unmistakable Mass Relay jump sound and War Asset terminal blips. - A Living Cosmic Canvas: Rather than placing software engineering projects on a dead, flat white page, the entire site exists inside deep space—evolving from a 2D starfield (Space 1.0) to a 3D orbital tether simulation (Space 2.0), and culminating in our crowning tribute: Space 3.0 — The Interactive 3D Galaxy Map.
2. Building Our Own Normandy CIC Galaxy Map in WebGL
When we built Space 3.0 (The 3D Galaxy Map), the goal was explicit: recreate the magic of standing at the Command Information Center (CIC) aboard the SSV Normandy, looking down at a rotating holographic projection of the Milky Way while Jack Wall and Sam Hulick's "Uncharted Worlds" hums in the background.
What We Engineered to Imitate the Game:
- 55,000-Star Spiral Galaxy Shader: Using custom Three.js
BufferGeometryand stateless GLSL vertex shaders, we mathematicaly modeled a rotating spiral galaxy with differential Keplerian angular velocity ($\omega \propto r^{-0.58}$), core stellar density gradients, and interactive cursor repulsion. - Tactical Holographic Grid & Cluster Rings: Just like selecting a Mass Relay cluster in Mass Effect 3, the galactic plane features an additive-blended polar coordinate grid (
rRing1,rRing2,rRing3) and interactive.me3-cluster-labelcallouts that group all 17+ engineering projects into distinct star clusters (Core Systems, Game Dev & Engines, Low-Level & Reversing, Tools & Utilities, and Solar System). - Mass Relay Warp Cinematics & Orbital Entry: Clicking any cluster fires the Mass Relay transit sequence, warping the camera from the macro galactic overview into a local Sector Flight where every software project is rendered as a procedural planet (Terran, Lava, Ice, Gas Giant, Desert) with Rayleigh atmospheric scattering and 3D
.glbartifacts orbiting in real time.
3. New Tribute Features: The Mass Effect OST Jukebox Tab & /shepard Protocol
To make sure BioWare's musical and artistic legacy remains permanently playable inside this corner of the internet, we have shipped two permanent additions to the portfolio today:
🎵 1. Dedicated "Mass Effect OST" Tab in the Jukebox
The site's background OST Jukebox (previously home to Final Fantasy Battle OST and Call of Duty Menu OST) now features a permanent third pillar: Mass Effect OST (N7 Tribute), styled in signature N7 Crimson & Alliance Blue. It includes the most iconic compositions by Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, Clint Mansell, Sascha Dikiciyan, and Cris Velasco:
- Uncharted Worlds (Galaxy Map Theme) — Mass Effect (2007) · Jack Wall & Sam Hulick
- Leaving Earth — Mass Effect 3 (2012) · Clint Mansell
- The Illusive Man — Mass Effect 2 (2010) · Jack Wall
- Suicide Mission — Mass Effect 2 (2010) · Jack Wall
- Vigil (Main Menu / Ilos Archive Theme) — Mass Effect (2007) · Jack Wall & Sam Hulick
- An End, Once and For All — Mass Effect 3 (2012) · Clint Mansell & Sam Hulick
- Mass Effect Theme (Main Theme) — Mass Effect (2007) · Jack Wall & Sam Hulick
- The Normandy Reborn — Mass Effect 2 (2010) · Jack Wall
- I Was Lost Without You — Mass Effect 3 (2012) · Sam Hulick
- A Future for the Krogan — Mass Effect 3 (2012) · Christopher Lennertz
- The End Run — Mass Effect 2 (2010) · Jack Wall
- M4 Part II (End Credits) — Mass Effect (2007) · Faunts
💻 2. The /shepard CLI Command
In SpetTerm (Ctrl + K), you can now type /shepard (or shepard, /sheppard, n7, bioware, music me):
- It outputs a dedicated N7 Systems Alliance Memorial Transmission honoring BioWare and Commander Shepard.
- It plays the authentic Normandy terminal telemetry cue and immediately launches the Mass Effect OST playlist in the Jukebox so you can browse the portfolio or fly through the Galaxy Map to the sound of the trilogy.
4. Thank You, BioWare — Keelah Se'lai
From Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire to Dragon Age and the Mass Effect trilogy, BioWare taught an entire generation of developers that technology—engines, shaders, state machines, and dialogue trees—exists to serve human emotion, curiosity, and wonder.
Whenever you press Q on this website to open the Galaxy Map, watch the 55,000 stars rotate across your screen, and hear the opening synth arpeggios of Uncharted Worlds, a piece of the Normandy lives on here.
"I should go."
